Subtle retro-futuristic sounds with a soulful angelic voice.
Signed to Norway’s Rune Grammofon label, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra and the work done by Susanna Wallumrod as a solo performer, have garnered more press plaudits than Woodwork have knots in their pine. Their first album “List of Lights and Buoys” topped many journalists “best of” lists in 2005 and included “one of the best break up songs ever” (Mojo) in the form of the stunning track, Believer.
The 2007 covers album “Melody Mountain”, featuring dramatically re-worked versions of classic songs by ACDC, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Joy Division was similarly acclaimed for both the stunning originality of the arrangements and the stark simplicity of the Dietrich like tragedy of the vocals.
Now with their aptly-named third studio album “3”, Susanna and the Magical Orchestra return to their own songwriting skills and present us with eight new originals as well as two covers. The music has a retro-futuristic edge to it, is darker and more electronic, the arrangements more evolving and varied, the words reflecting such topics as inner conflicts, human relations, outer space, stars and planets, journeys to unknown galaxies and more. But there's also room for an absolutely stunning interpretation of Roy Harper's beautiful love song ”Another Day” while the album ends on an optimistic note with the gorgeous chorus of ”Someday”.
