Accessible, pretty and gentle. Almost camouflages an altogether darker more knowing undercurrent.
Take the man behind The Memory Band and co-founder of Trunk Records, the twisted songwriting of Tunng’s main man, one half of Fence Collective duo The Bicycle Thieves and singer-songwriter Liam Bailey. Put them in front of a PC and add occasional input from guests including harpist Serafina Steer, Lisa Knapp, and various members of the Elysian Quartet and The Memory Band .The outcome is new collective The Accidental and their beguiling debut album, the definitively nu-folk “There Were Wolves”.
They create an accessible, pretty and gentle sound that almost camouflages an altogether darker more knowing undercurrent. Influences range from The King Singers, Panda Bear and Animal Collective. Opening track and debut single “Knock Knock” sets the tone with mysteriously chilling instrumental loops complimenting Sam’s lyrics. Elsewhere, the upbeat “I Can Hear Your Voice (in my head)” is about the thrill of meeting someone new, it’s so beautifully intense it make you want to get on your bike and cycle through the fields on the off-chance that you might be able to pounce on them once again!
