Beautifully twisted folk pop sing-a-longs with a generous splash of electronica. From a background including shoegazers Chapterhouse, a Soho basement and tron wunderkid Max Tundra came forth Tunng, now on their fourth album and still sounding ahead of whatever game you choose. Quietly and organically developing their sound over four major releases, Tunng incorporate elements of folk, pop and electronica, creating sound that is warm, optimistic and completely engaging. With latest album “…And Then We Saw Land” they have upped their levels of joyful tunes and big choruses, allowing for more singalong opportunities. Key tracks from the band’s latest album include ‘Hustle’, which builds a bed of acoustic guitars, piano and banjo to bind the sweet and wistful male/female duet vocals. ‘Don’t Look Down Or Back’ features the Mega Chorus – a 15 strong group of drinking buddies who lend their voices to the rousing melody. Earlier releases include ’Bricks' which arrives in a flurry of slide guitar and electronics before finding a jaunty synthesiser to support a sing-song melody. ‘Soup’ is heralded by twinkly keys before exploding into a drill and bass break - sheer magic. ‘Bullets’ is a slow-burn that develops from a slightly ominous vocal into a great lo-fi oom-pa rhythm, which is in equal parts bizarre, exciting and incredibly catchy. Maturing beyond the old ‘folktronica’ tag, it seems Tunng have developed into true pioneers of great British music, and we love them. Instrumental versions are available.
