Experimental feel good folk with natural percussion and dreamy vocals.
A fresh talent with songs so well crafted and instantly classic that most people would give up a left arm for her formidable song-writing skill: welcome to the world of Beth Jeans Houghton, who, to paraphrase The Guardian, joins the dots between Gwen Stefani and Vashti Bunyan. With her alternative blend of experimental folk she has been hailed by the NME as "a Joni Mitchell for the anti-folk generation" quite the accolade for such a new artist!
Her debut single on Static Caravan "Golden" is a delicately presented masterpiece of contemporary folk that echoes the greats of those who've gone before her but with a strong contemporary stamp of production from Adem and rightfully earns all the praise it has received so far. Her unique magical voice expresses optimistic desire to be "golden - for gold never rusts", it will leave you swaying in the gentle breeze like corn on a hot August day. Record Collector declared "it is a real rustic beauty worthy of it's own car commercial"!
"Nightswimmer" creates a celestial torch song laced with lush pads, twinkling glockenspiels and driving string arrangements resulting in what sounds like Kate Bush covering Enya (don't be alarmed, it actually works). With her latest release "Hot Toast Ep Vol.1", produced by Tunng mainman Mike Lindsay, we're treated to a galloping pop sing a long with vocal layerings that rival those of Animal Collective's P anda Bear. "I Will Return I Promise" trots through with a bluegrass feel, its upbeat positive message of moving on making it a perfect mid-western summer jam. "Hot Toast" builds on these new influences harking back to simpler times and a good old dance around the barn with a natural percussive sound.
