One-man-band Daniel James has produced, in 'Colonies', a tasty mix of folk, art-rock and textured electronic pop. On, Efterklang’s label, Rumraket the album draws from the same juxtaposition of sometimes fluttery, sometimes raw percussion and delicate ambient electronica. “Odds And Ends” is one of the stand-out tracks, delicate rhythms underline the momentum of this folk-pop vocal whose melody is deliberate and confidently understated. Another high point comes via “Sea Monsters”, introduced with melancholic strings and magical childlike keys then coming to fruition with Thom Yorke-esque vocals, a bleak yet warming track, like a fire on a deserted beach in December, raw elemental and truly beautiful.
