A rustic modern gem, with delicate yet concise lyrics. A worthy female counterpart to fellow Swede Jose Gonzalez.
In the old Swedish language, the word ‘tula’ means to wander far into the forest. It’s also a fitting choice of name for this artist, who’s rustic and grainy folk-inspired songs are deeply evocative of the backwoods of her home nation, Scandinavia.
Tula’s midwinter crackle of a debut release consists of two tracks, both of which hark back to idyllic landscapes and the enchanting beauty of nature with a rich yet melancholy tapestry of sound.
Written together with Cameron Miller (an acolyte of Badly Drawn Boy, Emiliana Torrini and Adrian Crowley) this debut release exemplifies two sides to Tula. The lead track ‘No Name’ exercises a circular melody picked out on acoustic guitar underpinned by Tula’s beguiling vocals. Whilst the sweeping elegance of ‘Remind Me’ is an altogether more subdued affair, sweetened by the most delicate of harmonies, but somehow brimming with a characteristic sense of warmth that unites the two sides to this sonically textured taste of Tula.
