Lushly arranged pop songs with stunning raw, quivering vocals from a mellow Black Mountain spin-off.
Lightning Dust is the lovechild of Amber Webber and Joshua Wells of Woodwork rockers Black Mountain. While Webber and Wells initially met through their involvement in Black Mountain and Pink Mountaintops, the songs written as Lightning Dust have found the two moving away from the epic to the intimate though still utterly heartfelt. These songs expand on basic pop templates, generating genre-exploding arrangements with Webber’s raw emotion making for one of the fiercest, most stirring vocal performances we’ve heard in a long time.
Mixed in with the Cali-canyon and psychedelic space moves you'll also find girl group pop, Krautrock, and Fleetwood Mac. The songs are more suited to lush and melodramatic arrangements than previous projects - cue the strings. In “Infinite Light”, Lightning Dust have delivered a cosmic record about the adventure in finding love and the journey in losing and rediscovering "the light." Delightful, I’m sure you’ll agree.
Our faves include ‘I Knew’, a sweet juxtaposition of melancholic lyrics and driven, guitar/synth combo production. ‘Dreamer’, which features striking Phil Spector-esque organ and string arrangements whilst perfectly showcasing Webber’s ethereal vocals and inviting you into it’s lullabied tones. ‘The Times’ utilises excitable percussion and a spirited piano riff to add a lighter touch to the Lightning Dust repertoire.
”…restrained and measured, swaddling their electric piano grooves in strings; while Webber's vocals, once Grace Slick-strident, have shrunk to a tremulous warble more akin to Devendra Banhart.” The Independent
“Infinite Light could be the most pleasant surprise of the year for anyone intrigued by the duo…Gorgeous, exquisite... and no, definitely not a side-project.” Drowned in Sound
“I could easily rustle up praise for every track on the album” Pitchfork
