Rocky and rhythmical, whilst sounding soft and soulful.
We first heard Sophie’s Pigeons second release, the AA side “It’s Gonna Bite/Only Us”. Needless to say we were blown away. It’s rocky and rhythmical like PJ Harvey whilst sounding soft and soulful. The instrumentation also has the eclecticism of boundary breakers such as Arcade Fire. The first E.P “Say Play Sway” takes on a much folksier tone, less rocky and ruckus. This gives us a chance to hear the softer, careful side to lead singer Sophie Nelson’s voice. The instrumentation also takes a spacious approach, with a more skiffle sound. The split personality of this band is what makes it so enthralling. It appeals to such a varied audience, ranging from folk connoisseurs to head banging rocksters. Big things afoot for our northern princess.
