Northern Soul, Punk and Pop fused together by ex Orange Juice frontman Edwyn Collins.
Edwyn Collins is Scottish singer songwriter and former front man of post punk outfit Orange Juice. His impressive musical career spans over thirty years, and he has released six solo albums to date. In 2005 it was debatable as to whether he would make music again, when the songwriter tragically suffered from two strokes and the MRSA virus. However within two years of the illness he had made a miraculous recovery, and began performing once more alongside the release of his sixth studio album that he had finished recording prior to his illness.
“Losing Sleep” is Collins’ seventh studio album, and is one that addresses the impact of his illness, featuring collaborations with artists such as Johnny Marr, members of The Cribs, Franz Ferdinand and upcoming talent The Drums. The tracks on the album possess a great sense of energy, encompassing elements from the genres of punk and northern soul.
Title track “Losing Sleep” is an uplifting track, featuring a backdrop of Motown styled percussion and pulsing bass as Collins’ vocals croon over the top, the track culminates in a crescendo of brass and frenzied guitar, which in turn amplifies the mood. Another key track off the album is “Do It Again” in which Collins has collaborated with indie greats Franz Ferdinand. The track possesses an energetic and joyful feel, opening with a bright and catchy riff. Instrumentation is then layered up and ascends into a blissful chorus, containing lively vocals and twinkling keys.
