Folking great harmonies and catchy choruses from this Seattle 6-piece.
The Head and the Heart are an acoustic folk outfit from Seattle, USA who formed in January 2010. Their rich sound has gained them comparisons to artists such as Fleet Foxes and Mumford and Suns. Despite being together for little over a year, they have gained great success in the live scene, having already opened for established acts such as Vampire Weekend and Dave Matthews. They have also recently gained rave reviews for their performances at SXSW 2011.
Their self titled debut album contains an earthy Americana vibe. Stand out tracks include “Lost in my mind” and “Drown in the valley”. Track “Drown in the valley” contains a wistful feel, opening with a lush finger picked acoustic guitar melody. The addition of beautiful string arrangements and three part harmonies heighten the mood. Lost in my mind is another key track on the album, a more uptempo number which contains a jovial feel, the track opens with acoustic guitar that drives the song along. Johnsons’ raw vocals entwine beautifully with smooth three part harmonies amongst a backdrop of shuffling percussion, and delicate piano.
"...mixing rootsy Americana with orchestral, chest-swelling chamber-pop." - Paste
"Each song feels like the story of a soul standing at the threshold of one of life’s most difficult crossroads. Songs of love, loss and introspection unfold like thoughts, cycling through feelings of despair, hope and optimism, sometimes simultaneously." - Yours Truly
