Full Time Hobby are babies compared to some of the labels we work with. Only 4 years old (so I suppose toddlers really) they have become established in the competitive UK indie music scene incredibly quickly. The first thing that brought them to my attention was the release of "Dream Brother", an album of contemporary nu-folk and indie pop artists like Sufjan Stevens, Viva Voce, Tunng, Adem, Magic Numbers and Katherine Williams covering the songs of Jeff and Tim Buckley. Not an new idea but so expertly crafted and A&R'd by the label that it was clear here was an exceptionally confident and talented group of music lovers with great taste and a steady hand to develop that talent. Clayhill were on the previous label run by the same team and I include them here because they are great and underrated band - though rated highly by Shane Meadows who put them in Dead Men's Shoes and This is England.
Viva Voce are a brilliant husband & wife duo who play drums and guitar and craft love songs of every conceivable tempo, viewpoint and genre as well as brilliant epic pop songs that have people punching the air and singing along.
Tunng are subverters of the folk genre, cutting and splicing their beautiful, charming and whimsical melodies to include samples of old film dialogue and all manner of studio glitches and whirrs to make the music pop out of the speakers.
From members of this group came this years nu folk supergroup, The Accidental, and their movingly simple and emotional album "There Were Wolves".
From the embers of Arab Strap rose Malcolm Middleton as a pounding pop rock miserablist who pulls off my favourite trick of making you think the songs are really upbeat because of the brilliant energy and rolling guitar lines when they are actually stuffed full of heartbreaking - though often funny - lyrics.
This year they excelled themselves with the release of not only The Accidental but the second album from Brighton prog popsters Fujiya and Miyagi and their particularly brilliant brand of low energy dance.
The third album by Texan troubadour Micah P Hinson whose signature gravelly voice and heart rending lyrics of heartbreak belies his still tender years had his growing army of fans - male and female - swooning and singing along.
As if that lot were not enough along came White Denim - no pretence, no manufacture just brilliant, burning garage punk rock that makes you want to jump up and down with joy and has left everyone gobsmacked and demanding more.
Their latest signing School of Seven Bells are set to release their album in March 2009, we give you a little taster of the joy to come and let you enjoy the sounds of Full Time Hobby.
NB for our USA contacts the only music from the Full Time Hobby catalogue available to licence from Woodwork/ Sugaroo in the USA is the second Tunng album, Comments of the Inner Chorus. Please contact us for further info.
